Hair Loss as a Side Effect

August 30, 2007

Tmdrunner, I feel your pain having run amok of medication-induced hair loss a few months ago myself. My hair was coming out by the handfuls. It was so disturbing! The loss of hair from stress – physical or psychological – is known as toxic alopecia. Toxic alopecia can also be brought on by medications. There are a number of meds that are known for this side effect. Lithium and Depakote, two very common prescriptions for those with bipolar disorder, are among the offenders.

Usually the hair loss is temporary and the hair will grow back after the medication is discontinued or the dose is reduced. I have this delightful fuzzy halo around my head now that my hair is growing back. If you are worried about the hair loss, talk to your doctor. I hooted and hollered to the pharmacologist and we were able to find a suitable replacement. The hair loss stopped almost immediately. Good luck!

A girl’s got to be resourceful, after all. And here we see the leaves in bloom atop Spears’ head, those familiar shades coming back in like fall foliage or Cheetos residue.

This mom cut is so convincing paired with those down-to-earth aviators, we’d assume she’s on her way to a soccer match, not the Saddle Ranch Saloon.

What next? Potpourri and a sweatshirt with kittens on it?

Longhairlovers Honors Hair Loss Awareness Month with Scientifically-Backed Natural Hair Growth Formula

August 15, 2007

Shea-mu Hair Butter is an all-natural hair growth option for people who want to avoid steroids and other drugs in their quest for more robust hair growth.

Circleville, OH (PRWEB) August 8, 2007 — August is Hair Loss Awareness Month according to the American Academy of Dermatology, and Longhairlovers.com, Inc. is bringing an all-natural alternative treatment to the table.

This patent-pending formula, dubbed Shea-mu Hair Butter, makes Longhairlovers the first hair care company to combine two scientifically proven natural ingredients in one product: refined Emu Oil and a mixture of Rosemary, Thyme, Lavender and Cedarwood essential oils.

The formula for Shea-mu Hair Butter was created based on two prominent hair growth studies:

Study #1: Michael Holick, M.D., Ph.D., and Professor of Medicine, Physiology, and Dermatology at Boston University School of Medicine, conducted an extensive test with emu oil on his patients with slow-growing hair. He reported in Drug & Cosmetic Industry Magazine (Jan. 1996) that the hair follicles of his test subjects were much more robust after regularly applying emu oil, suggesting that emu oil stimulates scalp circulation and hair growth. Additionally, Dr. Holick’s study showed that over 80% of hair follicles that had been asleep were awakened, and began growing.

Study #2: 44% of test subjects who massaged the specific combination of Thyme, Rosemary, Lavender and Cedarwood essential oils into their scalps each day showed significant improvement in hair growth, according to Scottish researchers in the Archives of Dermatology (1998; 134:1349-1352). Researchers concluded that not only did the aromatherapy work, it was also far safer than traditional hair loss treatments including conventional steroids.

Combining Emu Oil with these specific essential oils was the logical next step for Longhairlovers founder Jennifer Bahney, whose customers demanded an all-natural hair growth product that really works.

The name Shea-mu (pronounced Shay’-myou) comes from the high concentration of Shea Butter and Emu Oil, in addition to therapeutic-grade essential oils of Thyme, Rosemary, Lavender and Cedarwood Essential Oils. The formula also contains Hemp Seed Oil for its high levels of Essential Fatty Acids, making it an excellent hair and scalp conditioner; Natural Vitamin E for the powerful anti-oxidant protection it provides to the hair and scalp (up to four times the antioxidant levels of synthetic Vitamin E).; and Panthenol (Pro-vitamin B5), which actually penetrates the hair shaft to strengthen hair from the inside out.

(These ingredients are certified by the following entities: Oregon Tilth Certified Organic, Transfair USA Fair Trade Certified, American Emu Association Certified.)

Healthy hair grows an average of 1/2 inch per month, yet many peoples’ hair grows slower due to a lack of nutrients at the root. Shea-mu Hair Butter properly nourishes the root and encourages at least 1/2 inch of healthier, more robust hair growth each month. It takes approximately three months to see lasting results.

The ingredients in Shea-mu Hair Butter have been shown to improve the growth and health of living hair follicles. Unfortunately, no product yet discovered will regenerate dead or non-existent hair follicles.

Hair loss happens to 40 percent of women by age 60

August 7, 2007

Hair loss in women is not nearly as common as it is in men. However, more than 20 million women in the United States are affected by it. Heredity plays a big role in female hair loss, but stress, illness, and poor nutrition can also cause it.

The most common type of hair loss in women is female androgenetic alopecia, also known as female pattern baldness. By age 60, nearly 40 percent of women will experience some kind of hair loss. A large percent of women’s hair loss cases are reversible with the right diagnosis and treatment.

Androgenic alopecia is the most common cause of female hair loss. A few other causes include:

Alopecia areata: Patchy hair loss from scalp (or other hair-bearing areas), thought to be caused by an autoimmune disorder
Traction alopecia: Hair loss caused by pressure on the hair follicles, can be caused by tight braiding or weaving
Trichotillomania: Compulsive hair plucking, sometimes caused by a psychological disorder
Telogen effluvium: Unusually accelerated hair loss, may be caused by hormonal, stress related, nutritional, or drug related causes
Loose-anagen syndrome: A condition where scalp hair is easily pulled out with normal activity such as brushing

Triangular alopecia: Hair loss around the temples, no known cause
Scarring alopecia: Hair loss that occurs after physical trauma or burning affects hair follicles

Some female baldness can be treated with lasers in a doctor’s office.

It’s common for a women to feel like they are not living up to societal standards when they do not have a full head of hair. There seems to be a general social belief that it’s only acceptable for elderly women to have thinning hair. Hair loss is also associated with a widespread misconception that it only happens to men. When a woman starts to lose her hair it can often be a source of anxiety and depression.

The most popular ways to treat female hair loss are: hair transplantation, non-surgical hair replacement (hairpieces), FDA-approved pills, FDA-approved topical medications, and hormone correction.

Medical Edge — Calming concerns about hair loss in women

August 2, 2007

DEAR MAYO CLINIC: I’m a woman in my mid-40s, and I’m concerned about rapid hair loss. I see hair in the shower drain almost every morning. I went through some periods of this after each of my children was born, but this time it’s not stopping. I’ve heard of female pattern baldness. Could this be what’s happening to me? — Mapleview, Minn.

You may indeed have some female pattern thinning, but given your description of rapid and ongoing hair loss, a shedding type is more likely. Telogen effluvium, a common form of shedding hair loss, is often due to an underlying medical concern or change in your health. Female pattern thinning and telogen effluvium can occur separately or together.

First, it’s normal to shed 50 to 150 hairs a day. Every single hair on your scalp is in a cycle of growing, resting, and then falling out. The growing phase is two to six years and the duration of the growth phase varies by individual. The longer this phase, the longer your hair could grow. (If you have a short growth cycle, you won’t ever emulate Crystal Gayle, the recording artist known for her long tresses!)

After the growth phase, hair rests for two to three months and then falls out. The cycle begins again with new hair growth. With pattern thinning, called androgenetic alopecia, the growing phase shortens. New hair is finer and thinner, even fuzzy, and eventually, hair doesn’t grow much at all.

In men, this condition can lead to baldness. In women, it typically causes thinning of the hair on top of the head, but not the sides or back of the head. You can blame your parents for this condition. It’s hereditary. Men are more often affected. But pattern thinning is not unusual in women. Various studies show 30 to 60 percent of women are affected with pattern thinning.

Telogen effluvium occurs when more hair than normal switches out of the growing phase. Typically, 90 percent of your hair is growing. With telogen effluvium, only about 60 percent is growing. With more hair in the resting cycle, more shedding occurs, perhaps 300 hairs a day.

Telogen effluvium is common after childbirth. Significant illness, surgery, thyroid problems, rapid weight loss, low iron stores and some medications also can trigger telogen effluvium. There is no known association with aging. It occurs in children and adults of all ages.

It’s important to see your doctor to determine the cause of your hair loss. If telogen effluvium is the primary cause, treating the underlying health condition will likely slow and stop the hair loss over six to nine months.

For a subset of patients, the cause of shedding is never determined. Shedding may continue or it may resolve on its own. Even if shedding continues, it won’t result in baldness, just thinner hair.

If the cause is androgenetic alopecia, medications can help regrow hair and prevent further loss. Minoxidil (Rogaine) is an over-the-counter liquid medication that you need to use daily to maintain the new hair growth. Once you know the cause of your hair loss, your doctor may suggest other treatment options, too. — Rochelle Torgerson, M.D., Ph.D., Dermatology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.

Readers: Cell phones seem to get all the bad press for distracting us while we drive, but eating, looking at a map, reaching for something and watching something outside the car (such as an accident scene) are among the distractions that are at least as likely to lead to an auto accident.

Eliminating every distraction may not be feasible, but you can minimize risk with these safe-driving tips:

• Cage, leash or harness your pet before traveling.

• If you must eat or drink, have a passenger hand you items or arrange them within easy reach.

• Take time before you start to drive to adjust the seat, mirrors, seat belt and radio.

• Pull over when you talk on the cell phone. If you must talk and drive, have a passenger dial, keep conversations brief and use a headset.

Toxic Milk: Key Protein Affects Quality Of Maternal-infant Nutrition

July 26, 2007

“By examining PPARã functions in vivo, our work reveals an unexpected link between diet, inflammation and the quality of mothers milk, ” explained Dr. Evans.

PPARã (peroxisome proliferator-activator receptor gamma) is a nuclear receptor that is known to regulate metabolism and inflammation in various organisms. In fact, human PPARã is the main target of the drug class of thiazolidinediones (TZDs), which is used to manage diabetes.

Dr. Evans and colleagues sought to determine the role of PPARã in the lactating mammary gland. They generated a strain of mice that, as adults, lacked PPARã only in hematopoietic and endothelial cells. When these PPARã-deficient animals became mothers, they appeared normal, but the milk they produced most certainly was not.

“We were delighted and surprised by the discovery because it directly explores one of life’s most common events - breast feeding. These findings will enhance the understanding of why milk is healthful and the molecular pathways that create the bodies own quality control pipe line,” says Dr. Evans.

Discount Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at discount prices including free shipping.Discount Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order discount pharmacy online.

The researchers noticed that pups of the PPARã-deficient females — who were, themselves, genetically normal - were displaying a number of abnormalities, most noticeably marked hair loss across their trunks and growth retardation. The scientists determined that these abnormalities were due to their ingestion of “toxic milk” from their PPARã-deficient mothers: Either fostering by PPARã-normal mothers or weaning to solid food effectively cured these small and balding pups.

Through a variety of experimental approaches, Dr. Evans and colleagues determined that PPARã loss results in increased levels of pro-inflammatory lipids being released into the mothers’ milk. Ingestion of this “toxic milk” sets off an inflammatory response in the skin of nursing pups, which ultimately disrupts the hair growth cycle and renders them largely bald. In fact, treatment with the common anti-inflammatory aspirin completely rescues hair loss in these pups.

Are you losing your hair?

July 21, 2007

if you are losing hair, the reasons could be many — you are either anaemic or you are swallowing your mouthwash or maybe you’ve been dieting or have knocked your head or have a fungal infection.

Or perhaps: You are on drugs or have bad teeth or take too many aspirins or tie your hair too tightly or you have had a fever or eat too many nuts or have stopped taking the pill or your tonsils are infected or you have syphilis.

Or possibly: You are pulling your own hair out or you have had an operation or you are iron deficient or someone close has died or you have just had a baby or you are a diabetic or you are on the pill.

Unless perhaps: You have a bird in the house or you tease your hair or you have cancer or another internal disorder or you have been exposed to X-rays or you have a thyroid imbalance or you are not absorbing your zinc or you are going through menopause.

Assuming of course: That your hair loss is not normal, loss of hair does worry people and when you realise that any of the aforementioned factors can be responsible for hair loss, you can appreciate that it is important and right that you should worry.

The hair loss may be a normal temporary response to something you have experienced, such as an operation or a fever. The loss may be an inherited trait, so you must do the best you can to inhibit or compensate for the loss or it may be warning you that there is a medical or nutritional imbalance, and, therefore the sooner you seek help, the better.

Cancer News

July 17, 2007

A Japanese medical team has found that a form of antibiotic could prevent cancer patients from losing hair during chemotherapy, a doctor involved in the research said Monday.

Toshiyuki Sakai said his team had found “alopestatin” reduced hair loss by 70 percent when used on rats also given etoposide anti-cancer drugs.

Etoposide is widely used to treat lung and other cancers but can cause hair loss.

Sakai, professor at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, said his team was hoping to to put the agent to practical use in the future.

“I want people to know that few studies have been made on reducing side-effects of anti-cancer drugs,” he said.

Drugs Online - Buy Drugs Online at reasanoble prices.DrugOnline.cc provides confortable and easy way to order drugs online including drugs free shipping.

“This field is lagging behind (the development of cancer drugs) but is still important for patients’ quality of life.”

The study, which was outlined at an academic meeting in Japan last week, is still ongoing, and the chances are “low at the moment” that alopestatin will be commercialised soon, he said.

No clinical tests are yet in sight, but one possible use for humans would be to apply it to the head in the period when hair loss is most likely to occur during chemotherapy, he added.
